Trump Signs Interim Deal to End Iran War, Reopen Strait of Hormuz

By

President Donald Trump has signed an interim deal to end the war with Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement speeds up the timeline for the deal to take effect. Some Republicans criticised it as a victory for Tehran.

A US official confirmed the memorandum of understanding is now in effect. It is not yet clear if Iran has started moving to fully reopen the strait.

Trump told reporters he signed the document at the palace of Versailles near Paris. He had dinner there with French President Emmanuel Macron. Versailles was where world leaders signed the peace treaty that ended World War I in 1919.

According to a US official, Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf signed the memorandum digitally on Sunday. Trump witnessed that signing. On Wednesday, Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the document.

Under the draft seen by Bloomberg, the strait will reopen quickly. It had been closed for months, causing global energy prices to rise. The deal also includes immediate sanctions waivers for Iranian oil.

Talks on nuclear issues and further financial gains for Iran will follow. Attention now turns to shipping companies that had largely stopped sending vessels through the strait.
