The NGX (Nigerian Exchange Group), formerly known as the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), is the principal securities exchange in Nigeria and one of the largest in Africa. Founded in 1960 and headquartered in Lagos, the NGX facilitates the trading of equities, bonds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and other securities.
The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) is the benchmark index that tracks the performance of all listed companies. It is a key indicator of the overall health of the Nigerian stock market and economy. Companies listed on the NGX span sectors including banking, insurance, oil and gas, consumer goods, telecommunications, and agriculture.
NGX Trading Hours
The Nigerian Exchange operates Monday through Friday with the following schedule (West Africa Time - WAT):
- Pre-Open Session: 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM WAT
- Continuous Trading: 10:00 AM - 2:30 PM WAT
- Closing Auction: 2:30 PM - 2:35 PM WAT
The exchange is closed on Nigerian public holidays. Stock prices shown on this page are updated during trading hours.
How to Read NGX Stock Signals
The stock signals on Aboki Forex reflect live market pressure on each NGX-listed stock. Unlike static recommendations, these signals are dynamic — they update every minute during trading hours as buying and selling activity shifts. Here's what each signal means:
- BUY Signal: The stock is currently experiencing strong buying pressure. More market participants are looking to buy than sell, suggesting the price could move upward. A recommended entry price is shown to help you time your purchase.
- SELL Signal: Selling pressure is currently dominant on this stock. More participants are looking to exit, which could push the price down. The recommended price helps you decide when to take profits or reduce your position.
- HOLD Signal: Buying and selling pressure are roughly balanced. There is no strong directional push in either direction, so existing holders should maintain their position while watching for a shift.
Important: Because these signals change in real time throughout the trading day, the data you see on this page is a snapshot from the last build. To get live updates as signals change, download the Aboki Forex app on Android or iOS and enable push notifications. You'll receive instant alerts whenever a stock's signal flips from BUY to SELL or vice versa.
These signals should not be considered as financial advice. Always conduct your own research and consult with a licensed stockbroker before making investment decisions.
Understanding Bid, Ask, and Spread
Each stock card displays key trading data to help you make informed decisions:
- Bid Price: The highest price a buyer is currently willing to pay for the stock. The number in brackets shows the quantity at that bid.
- Ask Price: The lowest price a seller is willing to accept for the stock. The quantity available at that price is shown in brackets.
- Spread: The difference between the ask and bid prices. A tighter spread generally indicates a more liquid stock with higher trading activity.
- Volume: The total number of shares traded during the current session. Higher volume indicates more market interest.
- VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price): The average price weighted by volume, giving a more accurate picture of the true trading price.
How to Buy Stocks on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX)
If you are new to stock trading in Nigeria, here is a step-by-step guide to get started:
- Choose a Stockbroker: Select an SEC-registered stockbroker in Nigeria. Popular brokers include Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers, Meristem Securities, Cardinalstone, and Chapel Hill Denham.
- Open a CSCS Account: You need a Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS) account, which is a digital depository for your shares. Your broker can help you open one.
- Fund Your Account: Transfer funds to your brokerage account via bank transfer.
- Place Your Order: Tell your broker which stock to buy, the quantity, and whether it is a market order (at current price) or limit order (at your specified price).
- Monitor Your Portfolio: Track your investments using platforms like Aboki Forex for real-time signals and price updates.
