Two-Thirds of Market Watchers See US 10-Year Treasury Yield Above 5% This Year

By

A Bloomberg survey shows most market participants expect the US 10-year Treasury yield to break above 5% before the year ends. The forecast follows a bond selloff that has already pushed 30-year yields to multi-decade highs.

Survey details

Two-thirds of 392 respondents in the Markets Pulse survey see the 10-year yield topping 5% this year. That is a level barely touched since 2007.

Of those surveyed, 38% expect the breach in the fourth quarter. Another 28% see it happening this month or next. The poll also recorded the most participants in four years saying they expect 10-year yields to rise over the next month.

What it means

The survey points to sustained upward pressure on US borrowing costs. For global markets, higher US Treasury yields often shift investor attention away from riskier assets, but the direct impact on Nigeria will depend on how the naira and domestic yields react.
