UN, EU reaffirm Nigeria development partnership, review $500m project portfolio
By Aboki Forex —
The United Nations and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to stronger cooperation on Nigeria’s development priorities, better project delivery and sustainable impact. The pledge came in Abuja at the EU-UN Strategic Partnership Dialogue, where UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mohammed Fall and EU Delegation Head Ambassador Gautier Mignot reviewed joint work.
The dialogue covered UN reform, cooperation between the EU and its member states, and key EU-UN partnerships. Both sides said the aim is to improve delivery and collective impact across Nigeria.
EU support worth about $400m
Fall said the EU remains one of the UN’s biggest supporters and provides assistance beyond money, with projects valued at about $400 million in Nigeria. He said the partnership is crucial for development, humanitarian assistance, international solidarity and multilateralism at a time of growing global concern about international cooperation.
Fall said: ‘There are a lot of issues and questions around multilateralism and international solidarity, but the UN and the EU stand together to support solidarity between countries, multilateralism, development and humanitarian assistance.’
He said the meeting allowed both organisations to renew commitments, review progress, identify weak areas and address emerging challenges. He called for stronger collaboration with the Nigerian Government and urged it to increase engagement and mobilisation of domestic resources to tackle development gaps and humanitarian needs.
32 projects with 16 UN agencies
Mignot listed education, governance, democracy, human rights and security as priority areas. He described them as critical enablers of investments by both organisations. He said the strategic dialogue was meant to strengthen the partnership and improve project delivery so Nigerians benefit directly.
The EU envoy said the two sides reviewed a portfolio of about 32 projects implemented with 16 UN agencies. EU-funded projects in that portfolio are worth more than half a billion dollars.
Mignot said: ‘We have reviewed our portfolio of projects, some 32 projects, more than half a billion dollars’ worth of EU-funded projects working with 16 UN agencies.’
He said the partnership combines EU grants and financial contributions with the UN’s technical and political expertise in the field. He added that the collaboration extends to Nigerian authorities at federal and state levels to align interventions with national development priorities and strategies.
What it means for Nigeria
The dialogue gave both organisations a chance to assess ongoing programmes, improve coordination among development partners and seek better results. Both reiterated that sustained cooperation is needed to address Nigeria’s development challenges, strengthen institutions and respond to humanitarian needs through coordinated and results-oriented interventions.
