Trump Signals Possible End to US-Iran War, Says Crude Prices Will Fall

By

US President Donald Trump has signalled that the conflict between the United States and Iran could be nearing an end, raising expectations of easing geopolitical tensions and a potential decline in global oil prices. Speaking in Ireland, Trump said the war could end soon and predicted that crude prices would fall once the conflict is brought to a close.

His comments landed as tensions remain elevated across the Middle East, with fresh concerns over attacks on critical energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.

Drone strikes add to market unease

Trump also addressed reported drone attacks on oil pipelines in the Riyadh and Medina regions. The strikes caused damage and casualties, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile regional security situation.

The prospect of de-escalation between Washington and Tehran carries significant implications for global energy markets. Oil prices have been highly sensitive to fears that a prolonged conflict could disrupt supplies and threaten key shipping routes and production infrastructure across the Middle East.

Risk premium could ease

A sustained reduction in tensions could ease the geopolitical risk premium currently embedded in crude prices, putting downward pressure on benchmark oil prices.

For oil-importing economies, including Nigeria, a sustained fall in global crude prices could translate into lower energy costs. But for Africa's largest oil producer, cheaper crude could also create pressure on government revenues and foreign-exchange earnings if prices fall sharply.

That double edge matters in Abuja. Nigeria imports refined products while earning the bulk of its foreign exchange from crude exports, so a sharp slide in Brent usually weakens the naira's support base even as it trims the landed cost of petrol.

Outlook still uncertain

The developments come at a critical time for investors and policymakers, who are closely watching the conflict for signs of either further escalation or a broader diplomatic breakthrough.

Trump's latest remarks have injected a measure of optimism into markets, although the outlook remains highly uncertain as military and geopolitical tensions in the region persist.
