Eight companies listed on the Nigerian Exchange now have individual market values above $5 billion, and they jointly account for nearly two-thirds of the entire stock market. Their combined market capitalisation stood at N103.12 trillion ($77.86 billion) as of September 2.

That total represents about 64 per cent of the almost N160 trillion NGX market capitalisation, according to an analysis of NGX data, corporate financial statements and Central Bank of Nigeria exchange-rate figures. The companies are Airtel Africa, Dangote Cement, MTN Nigeria, BUA Foods, BUA Cement, Seplat Energy, First HoldCo and Aradel Holdings.

Airtel Africa, Dangote and MTN lead the pack

Airtel Africa is the most valuable company on the exchange, with a market value of $17.88 billion. Its shares surged 177.53 per cent in naira terms this year, climbing from N2,270 on January 2 to N6,300 on September 2, a 199.43 per cent return in dollar terms. The telecom group reported revenue of N2.53 trillion for the quarter ended June 30, up 30.95 per cent from N1.93 trillion a year earlier. Profit after tax rose 26.92 per cent to N270.67 billion, with earnings per share at N60.15.

Dangote Cement follows with a valuation of N17.45 trillion ($13.17 billion). Its shares gained 69.79 per cent in naira terms and 83.18 per cent in dollar terms. Revenue in the first half of 2026 was N2.51 trillion, up 21.35 per cent, while profit after tax rose 22.69 per cent to N638.53 billion.

MTN Nigeria is third, with a market capitalisation of N16.94 trillion ($12.79 billion). Its shares rose 57.93 per cent in naira terms and 70.39 per cent in dollar terms. First-half revenue increased 25.88 per cent to N2.99 trillion, and profit after tax jumped 70.55 per cent to N707.54 billion.

BUA Foods falls, energy stocks rally

BUA Foods, valued at $10.34 billion, was the only company in the group to see its share price fall in naira terms. The stock dropped 4.79 per cent from N798.90 to N760.60. Naira appreciation against the dollar turned that loss into a 2.72 per cent dollar return. Revenue fell 16.15 per cent to N765.12 billion in the first half of 2026, but profit after tax still rose 12.38 per cent to N292.27 billion.

Seplat Energy is sixth with a market capitalisation of N7.39 trillion ($5.58 billion). Its shares gained 112.10 per cent in naira terms and 128.83 per cent in dollar terms. First-half revenue rose 15.48 per cent to N2.50 trillion, while profit after tax soared 430.30 per cent to N225.48 billion.

Aradel Holdings crossed the $5 billion mark at $5.05 billion. Its shares rose 129.84 per cent in naira terms and 147.97 per cent in dollar terms. Revenue climbed 576.88 per cent to N2.49 trillion, helped by the consolidation of ND Western Limited and its majority interest in Renaissance Africa Energy Company.

First HoldCo posts biggest share gain

First HoldCo is seventh at $5.15 billion, but it recorded the strongest naira share-price performance of all eight companies. Its shares jumped 212.94 per cent from N47.90 to N149.90, translating to a 237.63 per cent dollar return. The banking group posted first-half revenue of N1.93 trillion, up 16.66 per cent, with profit after tax rising 81.57 per cent to N526.13 billion.

The $5 billion threshold was calculated using the NAFEM exchange rate of N1,324.50 to the dollar on September 2. Year-to-date dollar returns were calculated using N1,429 per dollar at the start of the year and N1,324.50 per dollar on September 2.

The concentration shows how a handful of companies in telecoms, cement, consumer goods, oil and gas and banking now drive the value of Nigeria's equity market, as the largest listed businesses continue to widen their lead over the rest of the exchange.
