Rand edges up as dollar slips, medium-term budget in focus
By Aboki Forex —
The South African rand firmed in early trade on Thursday, helped by a softer dollar, as traders turned their attention to next week's medium-term budget for signals on the country's fiscal outlook and credit rating prospects.
At 0638 GMT, the rand traded at 16.5575 against the dollar, about 0.3% firmer than its previous close. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of peers, fell and gave up most of the gains it made after stronger-than-expected US inflation data on Wednesday pushed it to an 18-month high.
Budget statement in focus
Investors will be watching Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's medium-term budget policy statement next week, amid expectations of an improving budget balance and a more favourable ratings outlook.
"The rand is looking to US markets for direction, but the (medium-term budget policy statement) will keep traders in limbo," ETM Analytics said in a note.
Bonds firmer too
South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was also firmer in early deals, with the yield falling 6.5 basis points to 8.69%.
The rand's move came from Johannesburg, where the currency has been trading in a tight range for much of the week, caught between offshore risk sentiment and domestic fiscal expectations.
Wednesday's US inflation print lifted the dollar to an 18-month peak before Thursday's pullback, leaving emerging market currencies such as the rand exposed to shifts in US rate expectations.
Next week's budget update is expected to give the clearest read yet on government revenue, spending pressures and the path of debt, all of which feed into how ratings agencies assess South Africa's creditworthiness.
