Senegal, IMF to Brief Creditors on Debt Plan in Oct. 6 Call
By Aboki Forex —
Senegal will hold a conference call with international creditors next week, alongside officials of the International Monetary Fund, to present its plans for tackling its debt crisis. The country announced the call on Wednesday.
The call is scheduled for Oct. 6. According to the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Planning, it "will allow the authorities to share with external creditors an update on Senegal's economic and financial situation, its economic reform program, and its debt treatment strategy, including creditor engagement plan, timeline, and next steps."
What Senegal Wants From Creditors
The ministry said the session is meant to bring external creditors up to date on the government's reform programme and the path it intends to follow in restructuring its obligations. The engagement plan, timeline and next steps are all on the agenda.
The Debt That Triggered the Talks
Senegal recently announced a debt treatment plan aimed at returning its finances to a sustainable footing. The move comes two years after the government disclosed billions of dollars of previously misreported debt. Analysts now put that hidden debt at roughly $13 billion.
Why It Matters
Senegal's creditor call is one of the clearest signals yet that the West African state is moving from disclosure to negotiation. The outcome will shape how much fiscal room Dakar has in the coming years, and it will be watched closely by other frontier market borrowers in the region weighing similar restructuring options.
