Petrol, diesel prices rise 86% in eight months, petrol hits N1,378/litre

The average prices of petrol and diesel have risen by 86 per cent in 2026, with both products reaching their highest average price levels for the year by September 22, according to the latest fuel price trend report by priceandpromo.
The report said the average price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol, rose to N1,378 per litre by September 22. Automotive gas oil, commonly known as diesel, increased to N1,899 per litre.
Petrol up 80.8% from January 13 base
Petrol recorded an 80.8 per cent increase from the January 13 base. Diesel rose by 91.8 per cent over the same period.
The combined average increase of the two products is 86.3 per cent, which rounds to 86 per cent.
Renewed upward movement
The report said: “The latest priceandpromo fuel price trend shows renewed upward movement following the relative stability observed between April and July.”
According to the report, the two fuels reached their highest average price levels for the year by September 22.
What the figures show
Petrol and diesel are central to transport, power generation, and industrial activity in Nigeria. The report tracks average price movements across the country. The latest data shows both fuels have moved sharply higher since the start of the year, with diesel posting a steeper increase than petrol.
Petrol rose from its January 13 base by 80.8 per cent. Diesel rose by 91.8 per cent over the same period. The average increase across both products was 86.3 per cent.
The priceandpromo report put the average petrol price at N1,378 per litre and diesel at N1,899 per litre by September 22.
The report noted that the price stability seen between April and July had given way to fresh increases.
