Nigerian stocks slip below 250,000 as Dangote Refinery IPO absorbs liquidity

By —

The NGX All-Share Index shed 1.98% to close at 249,710.59 points on Thursday, November 5, 2026, a decline of 5,052.22 points, after breaching the 250,000 mark. Profit-taking in large blue-chip counters pulled market valuation down by N3.3 trillion to N162.12 trillion. Year-to-date return softened to 60.47%, while market breadth turned negative with 20 gainers to 36 decliners.

Blue chips lead sell-off

Dangote Cement fell 10%, dragging the NGX Industrial Index down 7.14%. UACN dropped 7.85% and pulled the Consumer Goods Index down 1.12%. FIRSTHOLDCO lost 2.40% and STANBIC fell 0.85%, pulling the Banking Index down 0.66%. The Insurance Index went down 2.51%, marking the heaviest selling session in the sector.

The NGX shed another N540 billion as MTN Nigeria, Zenith Bank and GTCO dragged stocks lower. Turnover remained high at 29.55 billion, with trading across 33,199 deals, driven by substantial liquidity flows in Stanbic IBTC and Access Holdings (ACCESSCORP).

IPO and fixed income pull funds

Domestic and foreign institutional liquidity was sucked out of secondary market blue chips to pre-fund IPO subscriptions before the 2.15trn Dangote Refinery IPO closes in October. The entire exchange market capitalization will likely shoot up to almost 230 trillion once the giant capital injection is listed on the NGX, expected in December.

Macro risks include competing high-yield fixed income rates that are attractive to asset managers for short-term tactical rebalancing. There is a squeeze on existing blue-chip liquidity, profit-taking and a correction below the 250,000 level. Competitive yields from fixed income, such as NTB and OMO bills, are moving tactical asset managers from fully priced equities to money market investments.

Capital raises on the NGX persist, attracting liquidity while fundamentals improve long term and balance sheet resilience holds. Capital calls absorb supply at least temporarily on the exchange.

In company news, MTN Nigeria earns 2.5 times Airtel’s data revenue, but Airtel grows faster. Airtel Africa began a fresh share buyback tranche targeting 12 million shares.

Levels to watch

The key demand zone for Nigerian stocks turned below the upswing at 248,500 to 250,000. A breakout above 255,000 to 256,950 rules out a deeper correction if it closes above 250,000 on the daily chart. The secondary demand zone is 242,000 to 245,000, aligning with the 20-day and 50-day EMA zone. Institutional demanders tend to re-engage near this structural consolidation zone. The first upside resistance zone is 251,200 to 253,000. Validating 251,200 and an increase in daily volume signal a revival of the primary bull trend. RSI and MACD metrics indicate short-term overbought relief, which tends to unwind as medium-to-long-term technical trends build.

Tier-1 banks GTCO, Zenith and Access Corp, and industrial giants BUA Cement and Dangote Cement, saw robust sell pressure as institutional funds booked profits amid the bullish rally. Valuation support remains at the low end due to corporate earnings strength in banking and telecommunications, providing a valuation floor for long-term investors.

Short-term traders should wait for stabilization of candles near the support zone of 248,500 to 250,000 before getting into fresh longs. Long-term value investors can use market corrections for risk-to-reward entry opportunities to buy diversified blue chips that are oversold in their dip.
