Naira Extends Loss Against Dollar, Weakens to N1,365.53 at Official Market

By

The Nigerian naira fell further against the US dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Tuesday, July 28, 2026. Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed the naira dropped to N1,365.53 per dollar, down from N1,362.21 recorded on Monday. This represents a day-to-day depreciation of N3.32.

Black Market Holds Steady

At the parallel market, the naira remained unchanged at N1,410 per dollar on Tuesday, the same rate as Monday. The gap between the official and black market rates stood at N44.47 per dollar on Tuesday.

Foreign Reserves Drop for First Time in Weeks

The depreciation comes as Nigeria’s foreign reserves declined for the first time in weeks. According to CBN data, reserves fell to $51.96 billion on July 27, 2026, down from $52.02 billion recorded on Friday, July 24. The drop of $60 million reverses a recent run of gains.

Recall that the naira had already depreciated against the dollar at the official market on Monday, opening the week on a negative note. The continued slide in the official rate, combined with the reserves dip, signals sustained pressure on the country’s external buffers.

What This Means for the Naira and Nigerian Businesses

The persistent depreciation of the naira at the official window raises the cost of imports and puts fresh pressure on businesses that rely on forex for raw materials and equipment. With reserves slipping, the CBN may face reduced capacity to defend the currency, potentially widening the gap between official and parallel market rates. Consumers could see higher prices for imported goods in the coming weeks as traders adjust to the weaker naira.
