Nigeria Jumps Four Places in Africa Investability Ranking on Tinubu Reforms

By —

Nigeria was the biggest climber in a ranking of Africa's most investable markets, lifted by President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms. The country rose four places to eighth in the 2026 Bloomberg Economics Investment Risk-O-Meter.

The finding comes from the latest edition of An Investor's Guide to Africa. Nigeria, the continent's biggest oil producer and refiner, overtook Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and Namibia on the table.

Where Nigeria Improved

Nigeria gained ground on three of the five metrics the gauge uses to score markets. Those are economic strength, fiscal strength and external vulnerability.

The climb reflects a shift in how analysts are reading Nigeria's reform path under Tinubu, whose administration has pushed through changes to the foreign exchange regime and fuel subsidy since taking office.

The Wider African Field

The Investment Risk-O-Meter scores African markets on five measures. Nigeria's improvement in three of them was enough to move it past four regional peers, a sign that the gap between Nigeria and mid-tier markets on the continent is narrowing.

Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and Namibia all lost ground relative to Nigeria in this edition of the ranking.

What It Means

For Nigeria, a higher investability score matters for portfolio flows. Better fiscal and external vulnerability readings usually support sovereign risk pricing, which feeds into the cost of borrowing for the federal government and for Nigerian companies raising offshore debt.

It also shapes how foreign investors weigh naira assets. Nigeria has spent much of the last two years trying to attract back the hot money that left during the peak of its FX crisis. A ranking that puts the country above Kenya and Namibia gives that pitch a firmer footing, though the gauge measures risk, not returns.

The rank is a snapshot. Whether Nigeria holds the position in the next edition will depend on how the reforms land on inflation, the naira and government revenue.
