Nigeria, Tanzania, Ethiopia Lead Mission 300 as 50 Million Get Power Across Africa

By

Nigeria, Tanzania and Ethiopia are the top beneficiaries of Mission 300, a continent-wide electrification drive. The World Bank Group and the African Development Bank say the programme has connected more than 50 million people to electricity across 40 African countries.

The milestone moves the initiative closer to its target of providing power to 300 million Africans by 2030. Coordinated investments, policy reforms and private sector participation are speeding up access.

Nigeria connected over 4.5 million people through private sector-led projects backed by Mission 300. This shows the growing role of commercial investment in reaching underserved communities.

Tanzania recorded one of the strongest results. It added 7.5 million people to the grid. That is a fivefold increase in the country's average yearly electrification rate before the initiative launched in 2024.

Ethiopia connected 4.6 million people. Reforms that lowered grid connection costs and improved affordability for households and businesses drove the gains.

The World Bank and AfDB say Mission 300 now delivers electricity access at nearly twice the pace seen at its start. This reflects a new model that integrates investments across the energy value chain, from power generation to transmission.
