The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted 9,058.543 kilograms of illicit drugs at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos. The agency also arrested 260 suspects between January 2025 and now.

Commander Mohammad Ahmad of the NDLEA MMIA Strategic Command disclosed this on Friday during the commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He said the command also secured the conviction of 101 offenders within the same period.

Ahmad stated that the achievements reflect the command’s commitment to protecting the country from drug abuse and trafficking. He credited the results to consistent use of innovative enforcement strategies.

He called for sustained collaboration among government agencies, communities, and stakeholders to tackle the illicit drug trade through Nigeria’s busiest international airport.

Retired Assistant Commander-General of Narcotics Ibiba Odili urged Nigerians to support anti-drug campaigns. She said collective action is essential to address the growing threat of substance abuse and trafficking.

Chibuzor Osakwe, a participant at the event, stressed the need for more public enlightenment on drug abuse, especially for young people. She said youth must understand the consequences of illicit drug use and make healthy life choices.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has been observed every June 26 since 1989. The United Nations established the day to raise awareness against drug abuse and illegal drug trade. The 2026 edition focuses on strengthening global cooperation, preventing abuse, and promoting innovative responses to emerging drug challenges.
