The naira appreciated by N8.07 against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Monday, trading at N1,349.5372 per dollar. Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) official window shows the currency closed at N1,350 per dollar.

Official market performance

According to figures on the CBN's official platform, the naira traded at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) rate of N1,349.5372 per dollar on Monday, August 17, 2026. It closed at N1,350 per dollar after trading activities.

The currency had traded at an NFEM rate of N1,357.6088 on Friday, August 14, 2026. Monday's trading therefore delivered a gain of at least N8.07 for the naira.

Parallel market rates

At the parallel market, the buying rate decreased by N5 while the selling rate decreased by N7 when compared with Friday, August 14, 2026. This means the black market rates moved lower, reflecting a stronger naira.

According to AbokiFX, the naira to dollar exchange rate at the black market on Monday, August 17, 2026, was N1,400 for buying and N1,410 for selling.

What it means

The appreciation at the official window, alongside a dip in parallel market rates, points to reduced pressure on the naira. A narrower gap between official and black market rates could improve confidence for businesses and households watching the currency.
