Naira gains at official window, slips at parallel market

By

The naira appreciated against the dollar at the official foreign exchange window on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, but weakened at the parallel market. The currency traded at N1,362.5542 per dollar at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) official FX window.

Official market

Data shared on the CBN's official platform shows the naira traded at the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) rate of N1,362.5542 per dollar and closed at N1,361.0000 per dollar. On Monday, August 3, 2026, the naira traded at an NFEM rate of N1,364.8344 per dollar. That means the currency appreciated by at least N2.28 after Tuesday's trading activities.

Parallel market

At the parallel market, both the buying and selling rates increased by N5 when compared to the previous trading rate on Monday, August 3, 2026. According to AbokiFX, the naira-to-dollar exchange rate at the black market on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, was N1,415 per dollar for the buying rate and N1,420 per dollar for the selling rate. The higher rates mean the naira slipped against the dollar in that segment.

What it means for businesses

The gap between the official and parallel market rates remains a key concern for Nigerian businesses. Companies that source dollars from the black market face higher costs, while those with access to the official window get a relatively better rate. Market watchers will be looking at dollar supply and demand in the coming days to see if the naira can hold its official market gains.
