Naira appreciates by N8.21 against dollar in first week of September

The naira gained N8.21 against the United States dollar in the official foreign exchange market in the first week of September 2026. Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria shows the local currency closed at N1,321.22 per dollar on Friday, September 4, 2026, compared with N1,329.43 at the start of the month.
Official market gain
In the first four trading days of September 2026, the naira appreciated by N8.21 against the dollar in the official foreign exchange market. The gain reflects the latest movement in the official window during the week.
Black market stays flat
At the black market, the naira remained unchanged at N1,400 per dollar during the period under review. Multiple Bureau de Change operators in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, confirmed the flat rate.
Reserves rise
The naira's gain came as Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves rose to $54.08 billion on September 3, 2026, up from $53.81 billion the previous month. The increase in reserves adds to the backdrop of the naira's recent movement in the official market.
