Lekki Port Phase 2 to Begin Soon, Sanwo-Olu Confirms at Invest Lagos Summit

By

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that development work on Phase 2 of the Lekki Deep Seaport will start soon. The governor made this known at the Invest Lagos Summit 3.0, held on Tuesday at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island.

Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu said the port is already nearing its full installed capacity just five years after operations began. He stressed that the expansion is necessary to boost cargo handling and strengthen Lagos as a gateway for trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

“With the AfCFTA creating a market of over 1.4 billion people and a combined GDP exceeding $3 trillion, Lagos occupies a uniquely strategic position,” Sanwo-Olu said. “The Lekki Deep Seaport, within five years, is moving to phase two because it is almost reaching the full potential of its installed capacity.”

He added that the project is not just an aspiration but one that is already funded and progressing. The governor highlighted Lagos’ infrastructure agenda and its role in driving regional trade and economic integration.

Port MD Commends State Government’s Support

Wang Qiang, Managing Director of Lekki Port, praised the Lagos State Government for maintaining a stable and investment-friendly environment. He noted that the next phase will expand operational capacity, improve logistics along the Lekki Corridor, and attract more global shipping and logistics investments.

“We are deeply encouraged by the continued support of the Lagos State Government,” Qiang said. “The commencement of the next phase represents a significant milestone in our journey to expand capacity, enhance efficiency, and strengthen Lekki Port’s position as a premier gateway for West African trade under the AfCFTA framework.”

Qiang added that the expansion aligns with Nigeria’s broader trade facilitation agenda and the growing demands of regional and international shipping networks.
