Japan hikes visa fees by 400%, first increase in 48 years

Japan has announced a sharp increase in visa fees for foreign nationals, the first revision to its pricing structure since 1978. The new fees take effect from July 1, 2026.
The cost of a single-entry visa will rise from ¥3,000 ($18.60) to ¥15,000 ($92.99). That is a 400% jump. Multiple-entry visa fees will go from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000 ($187.97).
The adjustment was approved during a Cabinet meeting on Friday. Authorities say the move reflects inflation, rising administrative costs, and changes in currency values over the past 48 years.
The increase comes as Japan sees a surge in foreign arrivals. Government data shows the number of foreign residents hit a record 4.13 million at the end of 2025.
Officials say the extra revenue will support immigration management systems, Japanese language education programmes, and measures to address visa overstays.
Japan is also considering further increases in other immigration fees. Proposals include raising the cost of changing residency status or extending a stay from ¥5,500–¥6,000 to as much as ¥70,000. Permanent residency application fees could jump from ¥10,000 to ¥200,000 before March 2027.
