Pipeline security, fewer outages lift Nigeria's oil earnings to $9.39bn in Q2 2026

By —

Nigeria earned $9.39 billion from crude oil exports in the second quarter of 2026, with total exports rising to $20.08 billion from $15.56 billion in the first quarter. The jump in earnings came as production climbed above the country's OPEC quota and major pipeline outages eased.

The gain is the strongest signal yet that the country is recovering from years of losses blamed on crude theft, pipeline vandalism and production disruptions.

Exports rise, imports fall

Crude oil was not the only strong performer in the quarter. Gas exports rose to $3.63 billion, refined petroleum products climbed to $3.94 billion, while non-oil exports increased to $3.12 billion.

At the same time, crude oil imports fell sharply from $1.39 billion in Q1 to $580 million in Q2. The result was a much stronger external position for the country. Nigeria's current account surplus rose to $7.54 billion in Q2, up from $4.49 billion in Q1 and above the $5.17 billion recorded in the same quarter of 2025.

Behind the numbers lies a simple reality. Nigeria earned more because more petroleum was produced, moved and sold.

Production climbs past OPEC quota

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NUPRC, recorded a significant improvement in output this year. Combined crude oil and condensate production rose from 1.48 million barrels per day in February to 1.735 million barrels per day in June.

Crude oil production alone reached 1.56 million barrels per day in June, taking Nigeria above its OPEC quota of 1.5 million barrels per day. NUPRC attributed the strong June performance largely to stable production operations and the absence of major pipeline outages.

For years, Nigeria struggled to produce at levels consistent with its reserves and OPEC allocation. The problem was not always a shortage of oil underground. It was often getting the oil out safely through the evacuation system.

In March 2022, Heirs Holdings Chairman Tony Elumelu raised the alarm on social media that oil thieves were stealing more than 95 per cent of Nigeria's oil production. He said the Bonny Terminal was receiving less than 3,000 barrels of crude per day instead of more than 200,000 barrels. His company, Heirs Oil and Gas, was at some point losing as much as 50,000 barrels of crude daily to theft.

Security as the bridge to revenue

One of the major players in the federal government's effort to protect oil infrastructure is Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, TSSNL. Led by Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, the firm works with other security agencies on surveillance and protection operations in the Niger Delta.

Niger Delta Progressive Alliance President General Nse Victor Udoh said secure pipelines provide the foundation for predictability across the petroleum industry. He said sustained monitoring and rapid response had helped reduce pipeline breaches and illegal tapping, allowing more production to be accounted for, and argued that predictable flows help refineries plan, exporters meet commitments and investors assess risk.

The CBN balance-of-payments figures do not state that Tantita generated the $9.39 billion. The earnings reflect production levels, crude prices, export volumes, field performance and global market conditions. What security operations can do is reduce the chances of interruption between the oil field and the buyer.

For the naira, more dollars from crude mean stronger foreign exchange supply from the country's main export earner. That matters for importers, for manufacturers buying raw materials abroad and for the CBN's ability to defend the currency.
