CBN urges Nigerians to handle naira with care, pride

By —

The Central Bank of Nigeria has urged Nigerians, especially traders, to handle the naira with care, pride and dignity. The apex bank said proper handling would extend the lifespan of the currency and reduce the cost of replacing soiled and mutilated notes.

Dr Adedeji Adetona, Director, Currency Operations and Branch Management, gave the advice in Kano on Monday during a roadshow and public awareness campaign on the proper handling of the naira at Galadima Market. He was represented by Mr Ibrahim Yahya, Deputy Director, Currency Operations Department.

Campaign targets cash users

Adetona said the sensitisation was aimed at taking the message of proper handling of the naira directly to the people, particularly those who frequently engage in cash transactions. The campaign held at Galadima Market focused on traders and others who handle cash daily.

Naira as symbol of sovereignty

He described the naira as a symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty and national pride. He stressed the need for Nigerians to handle the currency carefully and effectively. According to him, care for the naira is not just about neat notes. It is also about respecting a national symbol and cutting the cost of replacing damaged currency.

What it means for traders

The CBN’s message places cash handling practices at the centre of efforts to keep the naira in good condition. For traders and consumers who use cash frequently, proper handling can help notes stay in circulation longer. That supports the CBN’s stated goal of reducing the cost of replacing soiled and mutilated notes.
