Consumer goods selloff erases N1.76tr from NGX, ASI drops 1.12%

Nigerian equities extended losses on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, as heavy selling in consumer goods stocks wiped approximately N1.76 trillion off market capitalisation. The NGX All-Share Index fell 1.12% to 243,967.09 points, down from 246,723.57 points.

Market capitalisation dropped to N157.49 trillion from N159.26 trillion, as investors locked in gains after Monday's record close. The ASI has now fallen about 4,563 points from its peak of 248,529.75 points.

Consumer goods stocks lead decline

The NGX Consumer Goods Index plunged 4.93% to 4,106.48 points from 4,319.51 points, the sharpest sector fall of the session. BUA Foods lost N84.50 per share, while Unilever Nigeria shed N14.55 per share. UAC Nigeria also declined 2.86% to N170.00.

Banking heavyweights saw profit-taking. Access Holdings fell 3.01% to N27.40. UBA declined 2.15% to N45.45. Zenith Bank eased 1.34% to N124.80. GTCO slipped 0.23% to N128.50.

Some large caps resisted the trend. ETI gained 9.93% to N71.40, adding N6.45 per share. Nestlé Nigeria rose 1.82% to N2,800. Nigerian Breweries gained 0.71% to N70.50. Transcorp advanced 1.20% to N38.00.

Sector performance

The Consumer Goods Index recorded the biggest loss, down 4.93%. The Banking Index declined 0.30% to 2,560.67 points. The Industrial Index fell 0.42% to 10,457.71 points.

The Insurance Index rose 0.71% to 1,152.13 points, the strongest sector support. The Oil & Gas Index edged up 0.02% to 5,238.56 points. The Commodity Index was unchanged at 1,743.53 points.

What it means for the market

Wednesday's loss is the second straight session of decline after Monday's record close. The correction has erased roughly 4,563 points from the ASI's peak. Heavy losses in BUA Foods and Unilever suggest large-cap profit-taking, not a broad selloff.

The near-term direction of the NGX depends on whether profit-taking in consumer goods and banking stocks persists or buying returns to the large caps that powered the rally.
