Cardoso Links Record $55.1bn Reserves to Economic Stability
By Aboki Forex —
Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves have reached $55.1bn, the highest level in 18 years, Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Olayemi Cardoso has said. He linked the stronger buffer to improved capacity to absorb global economic disruptions.
Cardoso spoke at the ongoing IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand. He used the platform to defend Nigeria’s economic reforms and monetary policy adjustments.
Reserves at 18-year high
The CBN governor said the reserves had climbed to $55.1bn. That level, he said, has strengthened Nigeria’s ability to withstand external pressures and reduced vulnerability to global shocks.
He pointed to geopolitical conflicts and international trade tensions as some of the risks facing the global economy.
Naira, inflation and households
Cardoso said the growing reserves buffer, along with relative stability in the naira and easing inflation, would help limit the impact of external pressures on households and businesses.
He defended the benefits of the country’s economic reforms and monetary policy adjustments at the meetings in Bangkok.
What it means for Nigeria
A stronger reserves position gives the CBN more room to manage external shocks and support confidence in the foreign exchange market. For households and businesses, the key benefit, according to Cardoso, is a smaller pass-through from global disruptions to domestic prices and the naira. The governor said Nigeria’s stronger external position has cut the country’s vulnerability to shocks, including uncertainties from geopolitical conflicts and international trade tensions.
