The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, has received the Central Bank of the Year Award at the Central Banking Awards ceremony in London.
Cardoso accepted the award on Wednesday. He dedicated it to the board, management, and staff of the bank. He praised their commitment to institutional reform and economic stability.
In his speech, Cardoso thanked Central Banking Publications and the award judges. He also congratulated other honorees at the event.
The governor stressed that the award was not a personal achievement. He called it a testament to the collective efforts of the entire bank. He highlighted the dedication, integrity, and expertise of professionals who work away from public attention.
“I accept this award on behalf of the board, management and staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” Cardoso said. “Above all, it belongs to the many dedicated professionals who serve our institution with integrity, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to the public good.”
Cardoso reflected on the global economic landscape. He noted that recent years had brought major challenges for central banks worldwide. Nigeria faced its own economic pressures and policy tests.
He listed difficult but necessary measures taken by the CBN. These include efforts to address high inflation, major reforms in the foreign exchange market, and investments in digital and financial infrastructure for long-term development.
Cardoso pointed to key milestones. Nigeria was removed from the Financial Action Task Force grey list. The banking sector recapitalisation exercise was completed successfully. He said these achievements came from collaboration among multiple institutions and stakeholders.
The governor stated that the bank’s reform agenda had a clear objective. It aimed to restore confidence, strengthen institutional resilience and policy credibility, and build a solid foundation for sustainable growth.
He acknowledged that significant work remained. But Cardoso expressed optimism about progress made and renewed confidence in the economy. He attributed these gains to support from the Federal Government, market participants, development partners, and the Nigerian people.
“We receive this recognition with humility,” Cardoso said. “We see it not as a destination, but as encouragement to continue the important work ahead.”
He reaffirmed the CBN’s commitment to preserving public confidence, safeguarding financial and monetary stability, and fulfilling its mandate with integrity, professionalism, and accountability.
