Benin City builds its own creative season beyond Lagos

By —

Benin City is emerging as a major creative and cultural hub, with a November calendar that stretches from visual storytelling and art fairs to technology and books. The historic Edo State capital is using its royal traditions and contemporary arts scene to pull creatives, technologists and literature lovers from across the continent.

Lagos still dominates Nigeria’s end-of-year creative calendar. Between October and December, the coastal metropolis hosts fashion weeks, design showcases, international art fairs and private gatherings. But just over an hour’s flight away, Benin City is proving that Nigeria’s cultural journey neither begins nor ends in Lagos.

Oba Ewuare II’s ten-year milestone

The city’s November momentum is anchored by a major royal anniversary. His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, is celebrating ten years on the throne. The anniversary programme runs from 4 October to 21 November 2026 and has featured food festivals, art and photography exhibitions, trade fairs and musical performances by Shallipopi, Hammerboi and Young Bolivia.

The celebrations have also welcomed a Royal Durbar attended by representatives of the Sultan of Sokoto. The event reinforced Edo State’s position as a historic meeting place of cultures.

A packed November calendar

Beyond the royal anniversary, Benin City’s November calendar includes:

November 2-4: Exposed! The Visual Storytelling Conference, organised by Tell That Story, brings photographers, filmmakers and visual artists together for three days of networking. It includes an exhibition by TTS × Fujifilm Visual Storytelling Grantees.

November 5: Obi’s House Benin, the popular DJ musical showcase, arrives for an expanded edition.

November 5-8: Benin Art Fair 2026, themed “Art in the Ancient City,” explores ties between historical craftsmanship and contemporary identity. This edition is dedicated to Nigeria’s first female bronze sculptor, Princess Elizabeth Akenzua Olowu.

November 7-10: Black Muse Art Festival, founded by contemporary artist Victor Ehikhamenor and inspired by Ben Okri, features sculpture-park exhibitions, film screenings, ecological activities and the unveiling of the Azagba Pavilion.

November 12-14: Benin Arts & Books Festival celebrates literature, public readings and visual expression, examining how stories shape community identity.

November 26: Benin Tech Fest 2.0 focuses on technology, innovation and startup growth, highlighting how Edo’s future remains tied to its heritage of problem-solving and enterprise.

December and the wider Edo season

The cultural momentum extends beyond November. In December, Benin City hosts the Omo N’Oba Annual Ugie and the Igue Festival. Surrounding Edo State communities host the Ososo Carnival in Akoko-Edo, the Au-Ukhua Carnival in Etsako East and the Ubiaja Carnival in Esan South-East.

Edo-born music stars such as Johnny Drille and Mavo are part of the city’s growing nightlife and tourism offering. Lagos will retain its prominent place on Nigeria’s cultural map, but Benin City’s rise shows that the creative industry thrives on regional diversity. Its strength lies in distinct heritage, royal traditions and a new generation of creatives.

For Nigerian businesses, the season points to end-of-year spending and tourism beyond Lagos. For travellers and business leaders planning the calendar, the message is simple: sometimes the most rewarding destination is the one you have not yet considered.
