Afreximbank Raises Creative Economy Financing to US$2 Billion as CANEX WKND 2026 Opens in Lagos
By Aboki Forex —
Afreximbank has raised its financing commitment to Africa's creative and cultural industries to US$2 billion, four times its initial US$500 million pledge. The bank announced the increase as CANEX WKND 2026 opened in Lagos on November 5.
The four-day event runs from November 5 to 8. The Federal Government of Nigeria is hosting it, while Afreximbank is organising it through its Creative Africa Nexus programme. The theme is “One People, United in Culture, Creating for the World.” The bank is targeting US$1 billion in investment deals at the Lagos gathering.
From US$500 million to US$2 billion
Afreximbank first committed US$500 million to Africa's creative and cultural industries in 2020. It later doubled the commitment to US$1 billion. The latest expansion takes it to US$2 billion. The financing is meant to help African creators and businesses scale, strengthen ownership of intellectual property and keep a larger share of the value generated by African cultural products.
The programme covers film and television, music, fashion, sport, literature and publishing, gastronomy and visual arts.
Finance summit and deal rooms
The Creative Economy Finance Summit will be a major feature. Afreximbank is organising it with the Creative Economy Practice at Co-Creation Hub. The summit will bring financial institutions and investors together to examine how creative-economy transactions can be structured, financed and de-risked.
CANEX Creations Inc. will lead talks on unlocking investment in African intellectual property. The CANEX Deal Room and Creative Pitch Sessions will connect creative entrepreneurs with financiers and investors. On November 6, a high-level conversation titled One Market, One Culture: Building the Creative Economy of Global Africa will look at how the global appeal of African culture can translate into stronger businesses, exports and investment.
The session will feature Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, ministers responsible for culture and the arts from Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa and Rwanda, and representatives of the International Finance Corporation and Afreximbank.
Technology will also feature. Discussions will cover artificial intelligence, authorship, intellectual property rights and the changing economics of creative production. The CANEX CreaThon, organised with pan-African technology company Gebeya, will bring creators, developers and innovators together to build projects in music, video and gaming. Participants will get mentorship, computing resources and access to African-built digital tools, with a US$50,000 prize pool.
Film, sport and fashion
Film and television sessions will examine the commercial infrastructure needed to expand African content into international markets. They include Stories Without Borders: Africa, Hollywood & the Global Diaspora, featuring former Afreximbank President Professor Benedict Oramah, and Made in Africa, Watched in Africa, which will examine research on film distribution, audiences and financing across Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal and South Africa.
Sport will feature discussions on athlete development, management and commercialisation. Former professional footballers Didier Drogba and Jay-Jay Okocha are scheduled to take part in a session titled When Giants Speak: The Business of the Game. A Legends Football Match will hold at Onikan Stadium on November 8.
Fashion activities will include masterclasses on building profitable African brands, developing textile value chains, improving market access and protecting intellectual property. The CANEX Fashion Show and Awards Night will also hold.
Expected participants and bank profit
The opening ceremony is expected to feature addresses from ministers responsible for culture and creative industries across 11 African countries. Expected speakers include Afreximbank President and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr George Elombi; Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Olajumoke Oduwole; Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, Wamkele Mene; and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Others expected include Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, Emmy Award-winning actor Uzo Aduba, filmmaker and actor Funke Akindele, and actors Richard Mofe-Damijo and Thuso Mbedu.
Afreximbank recorded net income of US$813.5 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, a 24% increase from the same period. The bank said stronger net interest income supported the profit.
The bigger financing push gives African creative businesses more room to seek structured capital and investors. It also puts Afreximbank's balance sheet behind a sector that has often struggled with bankable deals and intellectual property ownership.
