FCCPC, NTDA Partner to Boost Consumer Protection, Tourism Standards

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has signed a partnership with the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) to strengthen consumer rights and raise service standards in the tourism sector.
The agreement was reached on Tuesday when NTDA Director-General Ola Awakan visited FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
“The experience tourists receive upon arrival and throughout their stay determines whether they will return and whether they will recommend Nigeria to others,” Bello said. “Every stakeholder must therefore play a role in creating a welcoming and efficient tourism ecosystem.”
Bello said tourism is a key sector in Nigeria’s economic diversification drive. He stressed the need for stronger coordination among agencies responsible for shaping visitors’ experience.
He added that while tourism is a shared responsibility between federal and state governments, the NTDA sets standards and provides strategic direction. Bello reaffirmed the FCCPC’s commitment to protecting consumers across the tourism value chain, including handling complaints and promoting fair market practices.
Awakan described tourism as one of Nigeria’s underutilised economic assets. He said it remains central to the government’s economic diversification agenda under the Renewed Hope programme.
The NTDA is targeting reforms to improve hospitality standards, firm up tour guiding systems, and create tourism information desks at airports. The agency also wants more private sector participation to ensure sustainability in tourism projects.
Awakan highlighted plans to use storytelling and digital platforms to promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage. He proposed a tourism-focused streaming platform.
He commended the FCCPC for promoting fair market practices and consumer rights. Stronger collaboration between both institutions would improve confidence in the tourism sector, he said.
Awakan also named Bello as a Nigerian Tourism Ambassador in recognition of his support for sectoral development.
Both agencies agreed to maintain closer cooperation to improve service delivery, strengthen consumer protection mechanisms, and position tourism as a stronger contributor to economic growth and national development.
