Cooking Gas Prices Hit N1,900 per Kg as 12.5kg Refill Costs N15,000 to N23,750

Cooking gas, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), now ranges from N1,200 to N1,900 per kilogramme across Nigeria, with a standard 12.5kg cylinder refill costing between N15,000 and N23,750. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) put the average cooking gas price at N1,500 per kilogramme in October 2026, reflecting continued pressure on household cooking fuel.

The market survey shows wide differences by state and retailer. Benue recorded one of the highest retail prices, while Oyo had some of the lowest. The gap between the lowest and highest reported price is N700 per kilogramme. For a full 12.5kg cylinder, that is a difference of N8,750.

State-by-state cooking gas prices

In Benue State, consumers in Katsina-Ala pay N1,900 per kilogramme. In Plateau State, cooking gas sells for N1,600 per kilogramme in Jos, which translates to N20,000 for a 12.5kg cylinder.

Consumers in Enugu State pay N1,400 per kilogramme at gas stations, while independent retailers charge between N1,500 and N1,700. In Oyo State, prices range from N1,200 to N1,300 per kilogramme at some retail outlets, although some gas plants charge N1,500. During supply shortages, prices in Oyo have reportedly reached N1,700 per kilogramme.

In Lokoja, Kogi State, cooking gas sells for N1,400 per kilogramme at Egoja Gas Station, while other outlets charge N1,450. At these rates, a 12.5kg refill costs between N17,500 and N18,125.

Borno, Kebbi and campus costs

In Maiduguri, Borno State, consumers pay between N18,000 and N21,000 to refill a 12.5kg cylinder. That is a substantial increase from about N9,000 recorded two years ago. A resident reported buying 10kg for N15,000, or N1,500 per kilogramme. The survey table put Borno at N1,440 to N1,680 per kilogramme.

In Kebbi State, students at the Federal University Birnin Kebbi now pay N1,450 per kilogramme, compared with N1,390 previously. The adjustment is an increase of N60 per kilogramme.

The latest figures contrast with previous prices of N900 to N1,050 per kilogramme reported several months ago. Earlier market data also showed LPG prices rose by as much as 16% between October 30 and November 2, 2026.

What it means for households

The price spread means refill costs depend heavily on location and retailer. A 12.5kg cylinder now costs between N15,000 and N23,750, a range of N8,750. For Nigerian households and small businesses that rely on cooking gas, the difference can add up quickly, especially where supply shortages push prices higher.
