LASCOPA recovers ₦26.2m for Ikeja Electric customers, resolves 528 complaints

By —

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) recovered ₦26,243,758.75 in refunds and credit adjustments for Ikeja Electric consumers after resolving 528 complaints between January and September 2026. The agency received 556 complaints against Ikeja Electric Distribution Company in the nine-month period, leaving 28 under investigation.

That resolution rate is about 95%, LASCOPA said. The recovered funds came from billing disputes and other electricity-related grievances, the agency said, and show how mediation and regulatory intervention can secure redress for consumers.

How the complaints were handled

LASCOPA said complaints came through online and offline channels. Its Head of Complaints and Mediation Department, Yusuf Musiliu, said regular engagement sessions between consumers and Ikeja Electric officials helped resolve longstanding disagreements. The meetings gave affected customers room to present grievances, clarify disputed charges and negotiate mutually acceptable resolutions.

Musiliu encouraged dissatisfied consumers to use recognised complaint channels. He advised complainants to provide supporting evidence, including electricity bills, payment receipts and relevant correspondence, to speed up investigations.

Monthly meeting window

LASCOPA said its stakeholders' engagement with Ikeja Electric holds on the last Thursday of every month. The meetings allow electricity consumers with unresolved complaints to engage directly with company representatives and seek practical solutions.

Residents can report estimated billing, overbilling, disputed electricity charges, supply problems and other unfair practices to LASCOPA promptly. The agency said its interventions are guided by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law 2025, as amended.

Consumer protection push

LASCOPA's General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Afolabi Solebo, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to fairness, accountability and transparency in Lagos State's electricity distribution sector. He stressed the importance of protecting consumers against unfair practices while encouraging electricity providers to improve service delivery and respond promptly to legitimate grievances.

The agency maintained that consumers should not suffer financial losses from unjustified electricity charges without access to remedies. Affected residents can contact LASCOPA through its toll-free helpline, 080 0005 2726, available on weekdays, or by email at [email protected].

For Ikeja Electric customers, the outcome gives a clear route for disputed bills: document the complaint and use the monthly engagement window. For the broader market, it reinforces that electricity distribution disputes can be resolved through evidence and mediation rather than confrontation.
