DStv subscribers face HBO uncertainty ahead of Christmas Harry Potter premiere
By Aboki Forex —
DStv subscribers in Nigeria and other African markets face uncertainty over HBO content after MultiChoice's longstanding HBO agreement expired at the end of December 2025. The unresolved rights talks have left popular series unavailable on M-Net and raised questions over whether the Harry Potter television series will be available when it is scheduled for international release on December 25, 2026.
What changed after Canal+ takeover
Canal+, the French media giant that controls MultiChoice, centralised negotiations for international content rights in Paris after its takeover. Canal+ later secured agreements covering Warner-owned channels including Discovery, TLC and Cartoon Network. HBO's premium television and film content was excluded from those deals.
The gap is already visible on DStv. Major HBO productions including House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Lanterns are no longer available through M-Net under the previous broadcasting arrangements. The Gilded Age is also affected, with its upcoming season not included in M-Net's published schedule. Previously, DStv subscribers watched popular American shows shortly after international premieres through M-Net's Express from the US service.
Harry Potter deadline looms
The biggest test could come on December 25, 2026, when HBO's new Harry Potter television adaptation is reportedly scheduled for international release. The production is based on JK Rowling's bestselling novels and is expected to draw global attention. South Africa and potentially other African markets face uncertainty over access because HBO's distribution arrangements with MultiChoice remain unresolved. MultiChoice has not confirmed whether Nigerian subscribers will receive the series.
Talks continue, no timeline
Canal+ Africa's executive vice president of content for English- and Portuguese-speaking countries, Nomsa Philiso, said discussions with HBO were continuing. She said the negotiations were complicated by Warner's changing distribution strategy for Africa. Philiso expressed optimism that HBO programming could eventually return to MultiChoice platforms, but no timeline was provided. Warner Bros. Discovery acknowledged strong interest in Harry Potter across Africa but said it had no confirmed information regarding local availability.
The uncertainty comes as MultiChoice faces pressure to retain subscribers amid competition from international streaming platforms. For Nigerian households already managing rising entertainment costs, access to popular international programmes remains an important consideration when choosing television subscriptions. Without a new HBO agreement, DStv risks disappointing subscribers expecting premium content during the festive season.
Separately, MultiChoice has confirmed that its popular DStv Price Lock contracts are unlikely to return. The pay-TV operator suspended the affordable contracts in July 2026 as part of a broader restructuring aimed at simplifying its subscription offerings and aligning prices across streaming and decoder-based services.
