Canada publishes approved schools list for post-graduation work permits
By Aboki Forex —
Canada has published a list of designated learning institutions whose programmes may qualify international students for a post-graduation work permit, or PGWP. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued the list to guide prospective applicants on studying and working in the country. The list identifies approved institutions and indicates whether they offer eligible programmes. Nigerian students planning to study in Canada can use it as a starting point to identify institutions whose programmes may offer a pathway to post-study employment.
The list covers approved institutions in Alberta and British Columbia. It includes universities, colleges and specialised aviation schools. IRCC says admission to a listed institution alone does not guarantee eligibility for a PGWP. Not every course offered by a designated learning institution qualifies graduates for the permit.
What the permit does
A PGWP allows eligible international graduates to gain work experience in Canada after completing their studies. The permit can also help graduates gain Canadian work experience that may be relevant to future immigration applications. Applicants must still meet all applicable IRCC requirements. These include general eligibility conditions and requirements based on the level and type of study programme. Depending on the applicant's circumstances and programme, language proficiency and field-of-study requirements may also apply.
Alberta institutions on the list
The Alberta institutions listed are Adventure Aviation, Grande Prairie; Alberta Bible College, Calgary; Alberta University of the Arts, Calgary; Ambrose University, Calgary; Athabasca University, Athabasca and Edmonton; Bow Valley College, Calgary; Burman University, Lacombe; CFI Flight Academy, Claresholm and Okotoks; University of Calgary, Calgary; University of Lethbridge, Calgary and Lethbridge; and Vanguard College, Edmonton.
British Columbia institutions on the list
The British Columbia institutions listed are Acadia College, Langley; Acsenda School of Management, Vancouver; Adler University, Vancouver; Alexander College, Burnaby and Vancouver; British Columbia Institute of Technology, Burnaby, North Vancouver, Richmond and Vancouver; Camosun College, Victoria; Canadian Aviation College, Pitt Meadows; Canadian Flight Centre (CFC), Kamloops and Pitt Meadows; Capilano University, North Vancouver and Sechelt; Chinook Helicopters (1982) Ltd., Abbotsford; University of Northern British Columbia, Fort St. John, Prince George, Quesnel and Terrace; University of Victoria, Victoria; University of the Fraser Valley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Hope and Mission; Vancouver Aviation College, Pitt Meadows; Vancouver Community College, Vancouver; Vancouver Island University, Duncan, Nanaimo, Parksville and Powell River; Victoria Flying Club, Victoria; Western Community College, Abbotsford, Surrey and Prince George; and Yorkville University, Vancouver.
For Nigerians weighing study and migration options, the list narrows the search but does not replace checks on course eligibility. The final decision still depends on IRCC rules, the chosen programme and the applicant's ability to meet work permit conditions.
