JPMorgan Picks Ex-CBN Acting Governor Sarah Alade for Nigerian Merchant Bank Board

By —

JPMorgan Chase has appointed Sarah Omotunde Alade, a former acting governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, as an independent non-executive director of JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited. The appointment places one of Nigeria's most experienced monetary policy hands inside the governance of the proposed merchant bank as the American lender pushes deeper into Africa's largest economy.

Alade spent 24 years at the CBN and later served as Special Adviser on Finance and the Economy to former President Muhammadu Buhari.

From Ilorin to the apex bank

Alade began her working career in 1977 at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development in Ilorin, Kwara State. She later joined the University of Ilorin as a lecturer before moving to the CBN in 1993 as an assistant director in the Research Department.

At the apex bank she headed several departments responsible for government finance and fiscal analysis. In 2004 she became director of Banking Operations and later chaired the board of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS). She also served as secretary of the National Payments System Committee, where she contributed to building out Nigeria's financial infrastructure.

On March 26, 2007, she became deputy governor in charge of Economic Policy. Her brief covered monetary policy, economic research, statistics, trade and exchange, and financial markets.

Acting governor at a sensitive moment

Alade took over as acting governor of the CBN on February 20, 2014, after the suspension of then governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. She ran the apex bank through a turbulent stretch for monetary policy and financial markets.

She retired from the CBN in March 2017 after more than two decades of service. In November 2019, Buhari appointed her Special Adviser on Finance and the Economy. She worked at the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, advising on economic and fiscal matters.

She holds an Economics degree from the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, a master's degree from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the University of Ilorin.

A board seat, not a desk

As an independent non-executive director, Alade will provide strategic guidance and board-level oversight. She will not manage daily banking operations.

The CBN has already granted approval-in-principle to JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited. The proposed institution will not run retail banking like conventional lenders. Merchant banks serve businesses, institutional investors and large organisations through capital raising, corporate finance, investment advisory and structured financing.

For Nigerian companies, the entry of a global giant of JPMorgan's size could mean stronger links to international capital markets and more options for raising long-term funding. It could also sharpen competition in corporate and investment banking, where local lenders have largely held the field.

What services the bank can actually offer will depend on its final regulatory approvals and licensing conditions.
