Nigerian Passport Ranks 92nd Globally, Outranks 20 Countries in Henley Index

By —

Nigeria's passport has been ranked 92nd globally, with holders able to access 45 destinations without obtaining a visa in advance, according to the Henley Passport Index. The ranking improved from 94th place in October 2025, when Nigeria had access to 44 destinations.

The index compares passports by the number of destinations their holders can enter without a traditional visa before travelling. It measures travel access only and does not determine eligibility for work visas, student visas or permanent residency in other countries.

Nigeria Shares 92nd Place With Three Others

Nigeria holds the 92nd position alongside the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti and Laos. All four countries have access to 45 destinations.

Based on the supplied ranking, the Nigerian passport sits above 20 countries and territories, not 14 as stated in parts of the report. Those ranked below Nigeria include Turkmenistan at 93rd with 44 destinations, Myanmar at 94th with 43, and Ethiopia, Lebanon, South Sudan and Sudan, all tied at 95th with 41 destinations each.

Libya follows at 96th with 39 destinations. Eritrea and Sri Lanka share 97th with 38 destinations each. Iran and the Palestinian Territory are tied at 98th with 37 each. Bangladesh and North Korea share 99th with 35 destinations each.

Nepal is 100th with 34 destinations, Somalia 101st with 32, Yemen 102nd with 30, Pakistan 103rd with 29, and Iraq 104th with 28. Syria ranks 105th with 25 destinations, while Afghanistan sits last at 106th with 22 destinations.

Singapore Tops The Index

Singapore holds first place with access to 193 destinations. Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates share second place with 188 destinations each.

Sweden ranks third with 187 destinations. France, Germany, Italy and Spain are among several European countries sharing fourth place with 186 destinations each. Afghanistan occupies the bottom of the ranking at 106th with 22 destinations.

What Travellers Should Note

Nigeria's rise from 94th to 92nd and the increase from 44 to 45 accessible destinations point to a modest gain in the country's relative position and a slight expansion in travel access.

Entry requirements still differ by destination. Some countries offer visas on arrival or require electronic travel authorisations, while others impose conditions on passport validity, supporting documents and the length of stay. Travellers should confirm the rules of their destination before booking.

For Nigerian businesses and travellers, the one-destination gain keeps the passport in the lower half of the global index. The gap between Nigeria's 45 destinations and Singapore's 193 remains wide, and that difference shapes where Nigerian firms can send staff without visa delays.
