World Bank Eyes $5.79bn Private Financing for Nigeria, Targets 850,000 Jobs

By —

The World Bank Group is targeting $5.79 billion in private-sector financing for Nigeria, in a push expected to create about 850,000 direct and indirect jobs. The money is not a new loan or grant to the Federal Government. It covers financing already mobilised and investments expected from ongoing programmes.

The drive, detailed in a report titled Unlocking $5.79 Billion in Private Financing, covers agriculture, digital infrastructure, telecommunications and small businesses. The strategy combines policy reforms, commercial investments and risk-reduction measures to pull private capital into sectors the bank considers critical to Nigeria's economic development.

FINCLUDE and the MSME Push

The biggest single component is the Fostering Inclusive Finance for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria (FINCLUDE) programme. It aims to attract nearly $1.89 billion in private financing and support roughly 850,000 direct and indirect jobs.

FINCLUDE is built to improve access to finance for more than 250,000 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, with attention on sectors that carry strong employment potential. It includes a $500 million financing package backed by resources from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association, both arms of the World Bank Group.

At least 30 per cent of the financing is expected to reach women-owned businesses. The bank expects better access to capital to help small firms expand operations, hire more workers and add to economic growth.

Broadband Target for 58 Million Nigerians

The second pillar is the Building Resilient Digital Infrastructure for Growth (BRIDGE) Project. It aims to extend affordable broadband access to an additional 58 million Nigerians by 2030, lifting coverage from 92 million people in 2025 to 150 million.

BRIDGE is expected to attract at least $156 million in private equity during its first round of investor selection. Later rounds could unlock up to $1.1 billion by 2030.

The plan also covers connecting 38,800 public schools, 16,900 health facilities and 3,400 local government offices to broadband services. The bank projects that an additional 42 million young people and 15 million women will benefit.

What It Means for Nigerian Businesses

The announcement came as the World Bank introduced a new platform to draw funding, technical expertise and partnerships from philanthropic organisations to fight poverty and improve living conditions globally.

For Nigerian businesses, the signal is in the structure rather than the headline number. The bank is leaning on risk-sharing arrangements and policy reforms to make private investors comfortable, which matters in a market where lending rates and currency risk have kept long-term capital scarce.

For MSMEs and women-owned firms, FINCLUDE could widen the pool of affordable credit if the private money actually lands. For telecom operators and infrastructure investors, the BRIDGE targets set a clear pipeline of demand: schools, clinics, local government offices and tens of millions of unconnected Nigerians. Whether the jobs and coverage numbers hold will depend on how quickly those private rounds close.
