SMEDAN N50,000 conditional grant: how nano businesses can register interest

By —

Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has reopened its Conditional Grant Scheme, offering eligible Nigerian nano businesses N50,000 in non-repayable support. The grant is subject to programme conditions. Beneficiaries must employ one person.

The scheme targets nano businesses operating at local government level. Funds are meant for equipment purchases, stronger operations and employment. It is not a conventional business loan. It is conditional, non-repayable support, not unrestricted cash for every Nigerian.

What applicants need

The registration form on SMEDAN’s programme page asks for full name, email address, telephone number and business name. It also requests a Corporate Affairs Commission registration number, industry, years in business and programme selection. The CAC number field carries an asterisk, meaning it is required on the displayed form. Applicants without that information should seek clarification from SMEDAN before proceeding.

Interested owners should prepare accurate personal and business details before registering. Submitting an expression of interest does not guarantee payment. Eligibility depends on meeting applicable programme conditions.

How to apply

Visit the official SMEDAN Conditional Grant Scheme page and locate the “Register Interest” section. Complete the requested details carefully, check for errors and follow the registration instructions. After submission, monitor SMEDAN’s official communication channels for guidance on verification, selection and subsequent requirements. Retain any acknowledgement received. Do not treat registration alone as confirmation of selection. MSME Africa reported this.

Employment condition and intake dates

Beneficiaries must employ one person. Applicants should consider how an additional worker fits into their operations and how the business can sustain that role beyond the initial support. The employment requirement links the grant to job creation within communities.

SMEDAN’s official programme page does not specify an application deadline or announce a dated reopening. Reports published in August 2026 described the portal as reopened. However, available official information does not establish a fresh October reopening. Business owners should confirm current intake arrangements directly with SMEDAN before planning around an expected payment.

Expert caution

Financial expert Osas Igho described the scheme as a social investment safety net to cushion hardship in Nigeria. He warned against depending on tokenism for survival. “While I applaud the efforts of the Nigerian government, tokenism is not the way forward. The government needs to lift people out of poverty via tangible means such as job creation and building factories across the country,” he said in a telephone call.

Separately, the Federal Government, in partnership with the World p, launched a fresh round of technical and vocational training for 80,000 young Nigerians nationwide. The initiative aims to provide practical, market-relevant skills through competency development, industry internships and employment support.

For nano businesses, the N50,000 grant can help with equipment and daily operations if they meet the conditions. It is targeted support, not a broad cash transfer.
