NNPC petrol discount: How Nigerians can pay N66 less per litre before October 31

By —

Motorists buying petrol at NNPC Limited retail stations can pay N66 less per litre for 30 days under a federal government discount running through October. The offer began on October 1, 2026, as part of activities marking Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary.

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced the initiative on Thursday, October 8, 2026. He said the discount applies to NNPC retail outlets nationwide, with priority given to public transport operators. The programme ends on October 31.

You must register on the NNPC Fuel App

The discount is not automatic at the pump. Motorists must download the NNPC Fuel App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and complete registration. Payment for petrol must also be made through the app at participating NNPC Retail stations.

The app carries a station locator that helps users find eligible outlets near them. The discount is limited to NNPC retail stations and does not apply to petrol sold by independent marketers or other fuel retailers.

Commercial drivers, transport unions and fleet operators are also expected to register on the app. The federal government has indicated that public transport operators will receive priority under the initiative.

What you actually pay

The N66 per litre is deducted from the prevailing pump price at the time of purchase, so the final amount varies by station. If petrol sells for N1,370 per litre in Abuja, an eligible customer paying through the app would pay N1,304 per litre. At a Lagos station selling at N1,350 per litre, the price would drop to N1,284.

Those examples are based on the stated pump prices and may change if NNPC adjusts its rates. Motorists should therefore complete eligible purchases before the October 31 deadline to lock in the temporary reduction.

A relief measure, not a subsidy return

NNPC has clarified that the discount is a temporary customer relief measure and does not amount to a return of the petrol subsidy. The company said the offer would run throughout October at its retail stations nationwide.

For Nigerian businesses and households, the saving is real but short. A motorist buying 40 litres a week at a participating station saves N2,640 weekly while the programme lasts, provided the payment goes through the app. Transport operators, who get priority, carry the heaviest fuel burden and stand to gain the most from the N66 cut.

The catch is that the relief disappears on October 31, and it never reaches buyers who fill up at independent marketers' stations. Any lasting effect on transport fares or the cost of moving goods will depend on how widely the discount is used in the next few weeks, and on what NNPC does with pump prices after the window closes.
