MTN Restores Network After Outage Hit Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta and FCT
By Aboki Forex —
MTN Nigeria says its network services are fully back online after an outage disrupted calls and data for subscribers in parts of Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The company confirmed the restoration in an update after first alerting customers to the problem on Thursday, October 8, 2026.
In its initial notice, posted by MTN Nigeria Support on X, the operator said services could be temporarily unavailable in the affected areas. It then followed up with a message titled "We're Back Online!" announcing that the issue had been resolved.
What MTN told subscribers
The company apologised to customers who struggled to use its services during the disruption. "We sincerely apologise for the challenges where some customers experienced difficulty using our services," MTN said. "The issue has been resolved, and services are fully restored."
For subscribers still unable to connect, MTN offered a simple fix. "Still having issues? Please restart your device to reconnect," the company advised, before thanking customers for their understanding.
MTN did not disclose what caused the outage in its restoration notice.
How the alert was first raised
The disruption was flagged earlier in a network outage alert. "We're experiencing network challenges in some parts of Oyo, Lagos, Rivers, FCT and Delta States and our services may be temporarily unavailable as a result," the company said at the time.
The five areas named cover some of Nigeria's busiest commercial centres, including Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja, where mobile data carries a large share of daily business activity.
Why it matters
Telecom services underpin calls, internet access, mobile banking and business transactions. When a network goes down, the impact spreads quickly to customers and small businesses that depend on mobile connectivity to receive payments, reach suppliers and close sales.
MTN Nigeria is one of the country's major operators, providing voice and data services to subscribers nationwide. The latest update indicates the reported challenges have been cleared, though customers still offline have been asked to restart their devices.
The outage comes weeks after MTN Nigeria restored its airtime and data borrowing service, which had been disrupted for weeks amid a regulatory dispute. Eligible customers can again activate the service by dialling *303# to borrow airtime or data based on their approved credit limits. That restoration followed similar moves by Airtel and Glo, after the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) suspended enforcement of its Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional (DEON) Consumer Lending Regulations.
