Cooking Gas: 12.5kg Refill Now Costs Between ₦15,000 and ₦20,625 Depending on Where You Live
By Aboki Forex —
A 12.5kg cooking gas refill now costs between about ₦15,000 and ₦20,625 across Nigeria, as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) prices continue to differ sharply from one state and neighbourhood to another.
Market checks show retail prices ranging from ₦1,200 to ₦1,650 per kilogramme. At ₦1,200 per kg, a 12.5kg cylinder costs about ₦15,000 to fill. At ₦1,650 per kg, the same cylinder costs about ₦20,625.
What consumers pay in Lagos, Abuja, Rivers, Ogun and others
In Lagos, some retail outlets sold LPG at ₦1,600 per kilogramme, putting a 12.5kg refill at about ₦20,000. But Badagry, also in Lagos, recorded ₦1,200 per kilogramme, about ₦15,000 per refill.
Abuja and the FCT showed wide gaps. High-end locations charged about ₦1,650 per kg, or ₦20,625 for 12.5kg, while lower-end locations charged about ₦1,250 per kg, or ₦15,625.
Iriebe and Eleme in Rivers State both sold at about ₦1,600 per kg, which is ₦20,000 per refill. Biu in Borno State also recorded ₦1,650 per kg, or ₦20,625.
Shagamu in Ogun State sold at about ₦1,200 per kg, translating to ₦15,000. Osun recorded about ₦1,500 per kg, or ₦18,750, while Oyo was about ₦1,300 per kg, or ₦16,250.
The national average retail price for a 12.5kg refill reached about ₦17,616.94 in September 2026, according to LPG market data.
Plant and depot prices explain part of the gap
LPG was selling at plants for around ₦1,350 per kilogramme in Lagos, ₦1,300 in Osun, ₦1,400 in Ogun and ₦1,200 in Oyo. Retail prices climbed above these levels after transportation, distribution and other operating costs were added.
Depot prices also vary. Selected depot prices stood at about ₦990 per kilogramme at Dangote, ₦1,100 at Matrix, ₦1,125 at Navgas and ₦1,150 at A.Y.M Shafa and NIPCO.
Marketers have linked recent price movements to supply conditions, international energy-market volatility and logistics costs. Vanguard reported that LPG rose to about ₦1,300 per kilogramme in Lagos in September, while some smaller gas plants charged between ₦1,350 and ₦1,400.
What it means for households
Two families buying the same 12.5kg cylinder can pay thousands of naira more simply because they live in different locations. The price paid at the pump is shaped by depot costs, plant prices, transportation and the retailer's own operating expenses.
With LPG prices still fluctuating, checking several nearby retailers before refilling could help households find the cheapest option available in their area.
