NIPOST Unveils National Digital Postcode System, Gives Every Building a Digital Address

By —

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has unveiled the National Digital Postcode System, a nationwide platform that assigns a unique digital code to every building and location in Nigeria. The system was launched on October 1.

It gives Nigerians a standardised digital identifier for their homes and businesses, including locations that have no formally recognised street address. Users can search for their location on the platform and retrieve a corresponding digital postcode.

How the system works

The platform is built on geographic information system (GIS) technology, with NIPOST's GIS laboratory central to mapping and coding locations across the country. Once a user retrieves a postcode, it can be shared with delivery companies, banks, government agencies and other service providers.

The nationwide rollout follows a pilot programme NIPOST conducted in Abuja, during which the system was tested before it was deployed across the country. Officials said the digital postcodes are designed to complement existing physical address information rather than replace it entirely.

What the postcodes will be used for

NIPOST said the system is expected to support e-commerce, emergency response and financial services by giving providers a reliable and standardised way to identify and locate customers and properties. Deliveries, banking and emergency response services are among the immediate use cases listed.

For millions of Nigerians who describe their locations with informal references such as "turn left after the blue gate" or "beside the church", the system offers a digital alternative that can be used across multiple platforms and services, Punch reports.

Officials also noted that more accurate location data could improve last-mile delivery and help digital services function more efficiently.

What it means for Nigerian businesses

Poor addressing has long been one of the quiet costs of doing business in Nigeria. Logistics firms absorb failed deliveries, banks struggle to verify customer addresses, and online sellers lose orders when riders cannot find buyers. A single national digital code that works across platforms could cut some of that friction if adoption spreads.

The government said the system could support broader economic activity by making it easier for companies to reach customers and for public agencies to deliver services to specific locations.

The postcode rollout comes as the Federal Government moves to implement the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026, following the signing of the new legislation. The law recognises the National Identification Number (NIN) as the country's primary means of identification, a significant change in Nigeria's identity management framework.

That reform is aimed at creating a more integrated digital identity system, reducing duplication across identity databases and improving access to government and other public services through a unified identification framework.
