MRS Cuts Petrol to ₦1,370 Per Litre in Abuja as Dangote Refinery Price Cut Reaches Pumps

MRS filling stations in Abuja have cut the price of Premium Motor Spirit by ₦25 per litre, reducing pump prices to ₦1,370 from ₦1,395. The move follows the Dangote Petroleum Refinery's decision to lower its petrol gantry price by ₦25 per litre, the first clear sign that the refinery's reduction is reaching retail outlets.
A market survey on Monday, September 28, 2026, found the new price at MRS outlets in Katampe and along the Lugbe Expressway in Abuja. For a motorist buying 50 litres, the adjustment means spending ₦68,500 instead of ₦69,750, a saving of ₦1,250 on a single purchase.
Dangote refinery cut filters through
The reduction comes about a week after the Dangote Petroleum Refinery lowered its ex-depot petrol price from ₦1,350 to ₦1,325 per litre. The ₦25 per litre cut raised expectations that filling stations supplied by the plant would pass part of the relief to consumers.
MRS is one of the major fuel retailers tied to the distribution of petroleum products from the Dangote refinery. Its latest adjustment suggests the refinery's price action is beginning to show up at the pump.
Prices still uneven across Abuja
Despite the MRS cut, pump prices remain uneven across Abuja and surrounding areas. Petrol was selling for between ₦1,370 and ₦1,450 per litre, depending on the filling station and location.
That leaves a gap of as much as ₦80 per litre between outlets, a spread wide enough to push motorists to hunt for cheaper stations. The MRS reduction could also pile pressure on competing marketers to review their prices if wholesale petrol costs keep falling.
Attention is likely to shift to other major operators, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, as consumers watch for signs of broader reductions. Competition among filling stations could matter more if marketers continue to buy products at lower depot prices.
Retail petrol prices, however, are also shaped by transportation, logistics, operating costs and the price at which each marketer obtains supply. For motorists already paying more for transport and fuel, even ₦25 per litre provides some immediate relief.
What it means for motorists and marketers
The key question is whether the MRS adjustment stays limited to selected outlets or triggers a wider round of petrol price cuts across Abuja and other parts of Nigeria.
The Federal Government has approved the importation of 830,000MT of Premium Motor Spirit for the fourth quarter of 2026, as the country prepares for higher fuel demand during the Christmas and New Year festivities. That approval came as the Dangote Petroleum Refinery cut its petrol prices below estimated import landing costs, sharpening competition between locally refined and imported products.
