Nigeria Ranks 90th on Henley Passport Index With 44 Destinations Open Without Prior Visa

Nigeria sits in 90th place on the July 2026 Henley Passport Index, with access to 44 destinations that Nigerian passport holders can reach without a traditional prior visa appointment. The score covers visa-free entry, visas on arrival and some electronic travel arrangements.

For travellers, that can mean fewer embassy appointments and less paperwork before departure. But the index is a snapshot of access, not permission to enter. Border conditions, permitted length of stay and pre-travel formalities still apply.

Africa Leads the List

Africa accounts for the biggest share of Nigeria's passport access, helped by regional free-movement arrangements in West Africa. The 25 destinations are Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde Islands, Chad, Comoros Islands, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Togo.

Many of these sit in West Africa, which makes them practical for regional holidays, family visits and short business trips.

Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific

The Caribbean adds five destinations: Barbados, Dominica, Haiti, Montserrat, and St Kitts and Nevis.

A further five sit outside Africa and the Caribbean: Cambodia, Iran, Lebanon, Maldives and Timor-Leste.

Nine Pacific island destinations also appear: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Micronesia, Niue, Palau Islands, Samoa, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Visa-Free Is Not Visa on Arrival

The arrangements differ. Visa-free entry means a traveller can enter without getting a visa before departure, subject to border conditions and the allowed length of stay. Visa on arrival means the visa is issued at an approved entry point such as an airport rather than at an embassy. Electronic travel authorisation means an online process before boarding, which is not always a visa but still needs approval.

Kenya, for example, requires most foreign visitors, including Nigerians, to obtain an approved electronic travel authorisation before starting their journey. The application is online, and the official government portal advises travellers to allow time for processing. Seychelles also requires visitors to complete a travel authorisation through its electronic border system. So even where no traditional visa is needed, pre-travel formalities can still apply.

Check Before You Book

Nigerians should confirm entry conditions for their destination before paying for flights or accommodation, according to a Vanguard report. Requirements may include a valid passport, proof of accommodation, return or onward travel, sufficient funds, vaccination documents or an online travel authorisation.

The Henley index, which confirms Nigeria at 90th position with 44 destinations, is useful for spotting easier routes. It does not replace official immigration guidance. Travellers should check with the relevant embassy, consulate or government immigration portal for the latest rules, because passport access can change and inclusion in a mobility index does not guarantee admission.

Separately, the UAE added 153 visa-free destinations over two decades, rising to join Japan and South Korea near the top of the 2026 Henley Passport Index. That shows how quickly passport strength can shift when countries secure new agreements.
