New Zealand launches five-year Pathway Student Visa for international students

New Zealand has introduced the Pathway Student Visa, allowing international students to complete up to three consecutive courses under a single approval. The visa can last up to five years and permits students to work up to 25 hours per week, depending on their course conditions.
Instead of reapplying after each course, students can move from one programme to the next within the same visa framework, as long as every course belongs to their approved pathway.
How the visa works
The visa remains valid for up to five years, though the exact duration depends on the full study pathway. Students can take a gap of up to 16 weeks between programmes while still covered by the same visa.
Anyone moving to a second or third course must still meet the entry requirements for that next programme before progressing. Holders can work up to 25 hours a week during term, and full-time during scheduled breaks. The visa also allows international travel while it remains active.
Requirements and application conditions
To qualify, students need a formal offer from an approved pathway education provider. The provider must supply a letter of support listing each course in the pathway, along with start and end dates. Where two or more institutions are involved, a joint letter of support may be required.
Applicants must prove they can cover tuition fees and living costs, or show evidence of a recognised scholarship or sponsor. Immigration New Zealand requires full medical and travel insurance for the entire visa period. Students must also meet health and character requirements, and show genuine intention to study and leave when the visa expires.
Cost, processing time and family members
The Pathway Student Visa costs from NZD $750. Immigration New Zealand says 80% of applications are processed within eight weeks, and advises applying roughly three months before the planned travel date.
All applications must be submitted online, as paper submissions are no longer accepted. Partners and dependent children cannot be added to the main application, though eligible family members may apply separately for their own visas.
What this means for Nigerian applicants
For Nigerian students, the Pathway Student Visa removes the need for repeated visa applications when moving through a structured study plan. That cuts cost and uncertainty, but the entry conditions remain strict. An approved offer, proof of funds, insurance and genuine student status are all still required. The chance to work up to 25 hours per week during term may also help students manage living expenses abroad.
