Rice Prices Ease: See Latest Naira Rates for Big Bull, Mama Gold, Royal Stallion and Others
By Aboki Forex —
Rice prices have eased across Nigeria, with July and August recording the lowest prices compared with the same period in 2025. Dealers say the moderation over the past three months is providing some relief to consumers, though the market has not seen a dramatic nationwide crash.
Market data shows that the median price of a 50kg bag of Nigerian rice stood at about ₦55,000 at the end of August 2026, unchanged from early June. The price briefly dipped to about ₦52,000 in late July before returning to ₦55,000 in August.
What the Latest Figures Show
Big brands such as Mama Gold, Big Bull, Royal Stallion and Mama's Pride remain key benchmarks for Nigerian households. A July market survey found 50kg bags of popular rice brands selling between ₦40,000 and ₦87,000, depending on brand, quality and location. Dealers attributed the lower prices to earlier highs, improved supply and stronger competition among wholesalers and retailers.
Big Bull currently illustrates the mixed nature of the market. The July survey placed it between about ₦60,000 and ₦80,000 for a 50kg bag. A current retail listing is around ₦66,900, suggesting some retail-level moderation.
Royal Stallion followed a similar pattern. The July survey put it between about ₦65,000 and ₦87,000, while a recent retailer lists its 50kg bag around ₦70,000 to ₦75,000.
Mama Gold was about ₦63,000 to ₦75,000 in the July survey, with a recent retail listing around ₦72,000. Mama's Pride was about ₦62,000 to ₦66,000 in July, and a current retail listing is around ₦67,250.
Other Brands and Market Segments
Caprice is listed at around ₦80,000 in a recent Nigerian retail listing. Local or unbranded Nigerian rice is around ₦55,000 for a 50kg bag based on the latest market median. Foreign or parboiled rice sells for around ₦60,000 to ₦75,000, depending on the brand and market.
The latest figures point to a cooling rice market rather than a major price collapse. The broader 50kg Nigerian rice median remained at ₦55,000 between June and the end of August, despite a temporary July dip. Consumers are therefore benefiting from lower prices on some branded products, while the overall market has largely settled into a stable range.
What It Means for Buyers
For households planning purchases in September 2026, a reasonable benchmark is ₦55,000 to ₦75,000 for many 50kg bags. Premium brands and particular markets can push prices significantly higher. Location, transportation costs, grain quality, wholesale margins and retailer pricing will continue to determine the final price paid by consumers.
