TETFund N10bn research grant: application portal opens August 31 for Nigerian lecturers
By Aboki Forex —
The Federal Government has approved N10 billion for the 2026 National Research Fund (NRF), and lecturers in Nigeria's public tertiary institutions can begin applying from Monday, August 31, 2026. The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) said eligible researchers must first submit concept notes through its portal before the October 15, 2026 deadline.
Eligibility and application process
TETFund said lecturers in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria are eligible for the grant, according to a report by TheCable. Applications will be made by principal investigators, who are responsible for developing and submitting concept notes outlining their proposed research projects.
Submitting a concept note does not guarantee funding. Punch reports that TETFund said only principal investigators whose concept notes are evaluated and considered fundable will be invited to submit full research proposals for further consideration.
The process is entirely online. Applicants must visit the TETFund National Research Fund portal at nrf.tetfund.gov.ng to prepare and submit their concept notes. TETFund advised applicants to carefully study the research brief and application guidelines before submitting proposals to ensure they meet requirements.
The portal opens on August 31, 2026, and closes on October 15, 2026, giving eligible researchers more than six weeks to submit.
30 thematic areas across three categories
The 2026 NRF cycle will cover 30 priority thematic areas, grouped into three broad categories: humanities and social sciences; science, engineering, technology and innovation; and cross-cutting issues. The cross-cutting areas include emerging sectors such as the blue economy, clean and affordable energy, entrepreneurship and wealth creation, among others.
The wide range of themes means researchers from different academic disciplines can submit projects aligned with national development priorities. All concept notes submitted through the portal will be assessed by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee.
Continuation of the NRF cycle
TETFund said the 2026 cycle follows the completion of the 2025 NRF cycle, during which more than N6.09 billion was awarded to support 174 research projects. With N10 billion now approved for the 2026 cycle, the programme offers a major opportunity for researchers seeking funding to develop projects that address Nigeria's academic, economic and development challenges.
For researchers in public universities, this grant window provides a clear, structured path to secure federal funding for work that could shape policy, drive innovation and support Nigeria's economic diversification. Meeting the August 31 to October 15 window is the first step, and a strong concept note is critical.
