Xiaomi unveils Redmi 17 with 7,500mAh battery, 50MP camera and 120Hz display

Xiaomi has introduced the Redmi 17, a new smartphone with a 7,500mAh battery, a 50MP camera and a 6.9-inch 120Hz display. The device comes in both 4G and 5G models, with specifications varying by market.
Battery and charging
The standout feature is the 7,500mAh battery, one of the largest in Xiaomi's mainstream lineup. It uses silicon-carbon technology and supports up to 45W wired charging. The phone also supports up to 22.5W wired reverse charging, allowing it to power other compatible devices. This large battery is expected to appeal to Nigerian users who need longer use between charging sessions.
Display and camera
The Redmi 17 has a 6.9-inch display with 1,600 x 720-pixel resolution and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Xiaomi says the screen can reach up to 825 nits in high-brightness mode. It also carries TÜV Rheinland certifications for low blue light, flicker-free operation and circadian-friendly viewing. The large screen supports video playback, browsing and gaming, while the 120Hz refresh rate delivers smoother scrolling and animations.
On the camera side, the phone has a 50MP main rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture, plus an auxiliary camera. Features include HDR, portrait mode, night photography, document mode and time-lapse. Video recording goes up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. For selfies and video calls, the device has an 8MP front camera that also records 1080p at 30fps.
Performance and software
The Redmi 17 lineup includes two versions. The global 4G model is powered by MediaTek's Helio G91-Ultra chipset, while the 5G variant uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 processor. Both run Xiaomi's HyperOS 3, based on Android 16. Configurations and availability may differ by market.
Connectivity and other features
The phone comes with USB Type-C, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. Selected versions also include NFC, and storage can be expanded through a microSD card. Other features include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, AI face unlock and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The launch follows Xiaomi's earlier Redmi 14C and 15C models, which share the MediaTek Helio G81 Ultra chipset. The newer Redmi 15C adds improvements in battery capacity, charging, durability, display brightness and software support.
For Nigerian consumers, the Redmi 17's large battery and 120Hz display address two common demands: longer battery life and smoother performance for media and gaming. With both 4G and 5G options, Xiaomi is positioning the device to serve different segments of the market.
