Dangote Cement sanctions over 250 truck drivers in two years for safety breaches

By

Dangote Cement has sanctioned more than 250 truck drivers for safety violations between 2025 and 2026, including speeding, illegal haulage, and accidents. The company said 200 drivers were punished in 2025, while over 50 have already been disciplined in 2026.

The disclosure was made during a press briefing at the Dangote Cement Ibese plant in Ogun State on Thursday, where the company also showcased technology used to monitor drivers and improve road safety.

Sanctions and zero-tolerance policy

Muhammed Al-Hassan, Head of Human Resources at Dangote Cement Ibese, said disciplinary actions range from suspension to termination, depending on the severity of each violation. He explained that the company maintains a strict safety policy and allows only adequately trained drivers to operate its trucks.

Offences such as speeding, illegal haulage, and involvement in accidents attract appropriate sanctions based on their seriousness. Al-Hassan said 200 drivers were sanctioned in 2025, while more than 50 others had already been disciplined in 2026.

He stressed that Dangote Cement operates a zero-tolerance policy toward breaches of its safety protocols, with safety remaining a top priority. But he noted that the approach is not limited to punishment. Drivers who consistently demonstrate responsible and safe driving are recognised and rewarded as an incentive for others.

Operations and accountability

David Idiege, Head of Operations at Dangote Cement Ibese, said enforcement measures can extend beyond drivers when serious violations occur. He disclosed that the Ibese operation has more than 4,000 trucks, and sanctions are imposed according to the seriousness of each offence.

According to Idiege, if a driver absconds after committing a serious violation, the company may pursue the driver's guarantor. In cases involving major incidents, including fatal crashes, further legal action may also be considered.

The company said its road-safety strategy combines rigorous driver training, real-time monitoring technology, disciplinary measures, and incentives for responsible driving. These measures are designed to minimise road crashes, strengthen accountability, and promote safer and more professional haulage operations across Nigeria.

Dangote Group expansion plans

Separately, Dangote Group President Aliko Dangote recently announced plans to expand into steel manufacturing, electricity generation, and port infrastructure. He noted that the capacity of his 650,000-barrels-per-day refinery will be doubled within the next three years.

Dangote stressed that Africa must prioritise large-scale manufacturing over commodity exports to boost industrialisation.
