FG opens EMERGE grant programme for Nigerian mining explorers
By Aboki Forex —
The federal government has opened applications for the Early-Stage Mineral Exploration & Research Grant Endowment (EMERGE), a funding programme for mining companies, universities and postgraduate researchers. Two virtual information sessions will hold on August 20 and 21, 2026 for prospective applicants.
The programme is designed to support Nigeria's mining sector and unlock solid mineral potential, providing catalytic grants to explorers, innovators and researchers. It covers three funding streams: exploration, critical minerals and research.
Who can apply
Three categories of applicants are eligible. Non-producing early-stage exploration companies can apply for grants covering geological mapping, geochemical and geophysical surveys, drilling and assaying. Such applicants must have completed some prospecting, be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), hold a valid Mining Cadastre licence, have credible geological data and maintain a qualified technical team.
Accredited Nigerian university departments and research institutions working in geosciences, mining and related disciplines can also apply. Master's and doctoral researchers studying geology, geophysics, geochemistry, mineral processing, metallurgy and related fields at Nigerian institutions can seek funding under the research stream.
Funding streams and sector potential
The exploration stream provides grants for grassroots and early-stage mineral exploration. The critical minerals stream supports targeted exploration for Nigeria's critical minerals and innovative processing technologies to strengthen domestic mineral value chains. The research stream funds applied geoscience and mineral-processing research aimed at improving Nigeria's geological knowledge base.
Nigeria has more than 500 mineral locations and over 44 viable minerals, including critical, industrial and metallic minerals. Despite this potential, the sector currently contributes less than one per cent to Nigeria's gross domestic product (GDP). EMERGE aims to bridge the gap between mineral discoveries and commercially viable projects by reducing risks associated with early-stage exploration, helping Nigeria move beyond raw mineral extraction.
Application process and accelerator
Applicants must register on the EMERGE application portal, prepare the required documents for their funding stream, upload the documents and submit the completed forms for assessment. Those unsure of their eligibility can check without creating a portal account.
The programme also includes the EMERGE Accelerator, which offers training on exploration best practices, assistance in preparing projects to attract financing, business advisory services on corporate governance and compliance, and opportunities to showcase projects to investors and off-takers. This is meant to help successful applicants progress from grant funding to private investment and build a pipeline of bankable mining projects that can create jobs and contribute to economic growth.
Information sessions are scheduled for August 20 and August 21, covering exploration, critical minerals, research and development. Application is through the EMERGE portal.
What it means for Nigerian businesses
With mining contributing less than one per cent of GDP, the grant programme is an attempt to move early-stage projects toward private investment. For Nigerian businesses and researchers, it offers a chance to access funding and investor connections in a sector with significant untapped potential.
