FG reopens free CAC registration for 250,000 small businesses, how to apply

The Federal Government has reopened free Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) business name registration for 250,000 nano, micro and small enterprises across Nigeria. Eligible businesses can now register at zero cost through the official SMEDAN portal.
What the programme offers
The initiative is run by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) in partnership with CAC. It was approved under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to strengthen Nigeria's MSME sector, deepen financial inclusion and bring more businesses into the formal economy.
Successful applicants will have their business names registered with CAC without paying the statutory registration fee. The programme targets businesses that have not already obtained a CAC registration number. According to SMEDAN, entrepreneurs already captured in its database but without CAC registration may also qualify.
Beyond formalising businesses, the programme connects successful applicants with business development support, training and other opportunities aimed at improving the sustainability and competitiveness of small enterprises.
How to apply
Interested entrepreneurs should visit the official SMEDAN registration portal and create an account with their name, email address and password. They must complete their business profile with accurate information and provide the required personal and business details for verification.
Applicants should indicate that the business does not already have a CAC registration number when prompted. They should review the information carefully and submit the application. SMEDAN will send confirmation and further instructions if selected. The portal currently provides a business registration sign-up page and CAC registration service for applicants.
Beware of fraudsters
SMEDAN has warned applicants to use only the official portal. Entrepreneurs should avoid paying agents who claim they can fast-track applications or guarantee selection. The registration is free, and anyone demanding money is not authorised.
For small business owners who delayed formalising their operations because of cost, this reopening offers a timely chance to secure official registration while the available slots remain. It also brings more businesses into the formal economy, giving them better access to government-backed funding and support services.
