DStv Stream hit by outages as Premium subscribers lose seven channels

DStv Stream subscribers in South Africa and Nigeria are reporting live TV disruptions, with some unable to launch channels or facing repeated disconnections. The problems come just after MultiChoice removed seven channels from the DStv Premium package.
Complaints have surged on social media, with users flagging errors during live programming, especially Big Brother Naija.
CDNAT 500 error and connection failures
A South African subscriber told MyBroadband that DStv Stream displayed a CDNAT 500 error when they tried to launch a channel. Retrying sometimes allowed the channel to start, but the service could disconnect shortly afterwards.
In other cases, channels reportedly failed to load completely before eventually connecting and displaying another error. One customer posted a picture of an error message on their television: “Whoops! Looks like something went wrong. Please try again later.” Another subscriber saw a browser error indicating a problem on DStv's server.
Nigerian users also affected
The disruption was not confined to South Africa. Some Nigerian DStv Stream customers also complained about difficulties accessing the service, describing the platform as frustrating. One Nigerian user linked their complaint to the Big Brother Naija hashtag, noting the timing was particularly frustrating for viewers trying to follow live programming.
Outage-monitoring platform Downdetector indicated that reports of DStv problems began to rise around 18:00 on Thursday, suggesting the issue may have affected a wider group of users.
Background and what it means
Not every complaint may be linked to the outage. One subscriber said they had been unable to use the DStv Stream app for several weeks after switching from Showmax.
MultiChoice was contacted for comment on the reported disruption. At the time of publication, the company had yet to provide feedback.
The latest problems add another headache for DStv customers already adjusting to significant changes in the platform's channel lineup. MultiChoice recently removed seven channels from its premium DStv package, and Showmax has been shut down. Meanwhile, MTN has launched MTN One TV, a new streaming platform positioned to rival Netflix. That launch comes nine years after MTN shut down its VU streaming video platform.
For Nigerian consumers, the outage is a reminder of how fragile pay-TV streaming can be, especially during high-demand moments like Big Brother Naija. With more streaming options entering the market, DStv Stream cannot afford repeated disruptions.
