Canada lists over 60 in-demand jobs across nine provinces for PR pathways

Canada's provincial immigration programmes have published lists of over 60 occupations considered in demand, covering healthcare, technology, construction, education, agriculture and hospitality. The lists come from nine provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, Alberta and Prince Edward Island.
Which sectors are targeted
Healthcare occupations feature prominently in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. These include general practitioners, family physicians, specialists in surgery, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dentists, physiotherapists, medical laboratory technologists, pharmacy technicians, sonographers and home support workers.
Technology roles such as data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, software engineers, web developers, database analysts and computer systems managers are targeted in Saskatchewan, Ontario and Alberta. Construction and skilled trades, including electricians, welders, carpenters, plumbers, heavy-duty equipment mechanics and crane operators, are listed in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and British Columbia.
Education and childcare occupations, such as secondary school teachers, elementary and kindergarten teachers, early childhood educators, teaching assistants and French-speaking teachers, appear in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and British Columbia. Agriculture and food processing roles like specialised livestock workers, farm machinery operators, harvesting labourers and food processing machine operators are covered under Saskatchewan's Agriculture Talent Pathway, while Quebec has a separate immigration pilot targeting food-processing workers.
Alberta's Tourism and Hospitality stream targets restaurant and food service managers, chefs, cooks, bartenders, hotel front desk clerks, tour and travel guides, kitchen helpers and cleaners. That stream requires job offers in eligible occupations.
Job offer rules vary by province
Requirements differ depending on the province and immigration pathway. Saskatchewan's Express Entry and Occupation In-Demand streams do not require a job offer, but candidates must meet the points threshold and receive an invitation to apply. By contrast, Nova Scotia's construction worker pathway requires applicants to have a job offer from a Nova Scotia employer. Similarly, Alberta's Accelerated Tech Pathway targets candidates with job offers in eligible technology occupations.
Having experience in one of the listed occupations does not automatically guarantee provincial nomination. Applicants must still meet the specific requirements of the immigration stream they intend to use.
Recent work permit change
Earlier, Canada changed the rules for a key work permit exemption, blocking foreign workers from qualifying if they had not yet started their job with an overseas employer before relocating. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada published updated guidance on July 29, 2026, revising the eligibility criteria for the C20 reciprocal employment exemption. That exemption allows certain foreign nationals to work in Canada without first undergoing a Labour Market Impact Assessment. Under the old system, a foreign national could secure a C20 work permit even if employment with the foreign company was only due to begin after arriving in Canada.
For Nigerians with skills in these fields, the announcement confirms that several provinces have concrete pathways to permanent residence, though each stream has its own conditions. Evaluating the right province and programme is the key first step.
